Purpose of the Position

The Information Architect is primarily responsible for assessing web site content requirements and for developing logical site maps that provide users with a highly intuitive framework for accessing information. The Information Architect will also assist the Usability Specialist in organizing formal usability/paper prototype testing and conducting card-sorting exercises. This person is an adept problem-solver who shows a strong commitment to understanding both the client’s business objectives and their target user needs.

Key Accountabilities

  • leads the information architecture effort for all clients, charting content requirements for every site and developing detailed site maps that follow logical navigational flows
  • standardizes and streamlines the documentation of all information architecture and IA processes
  • collaborates with designers and usability specialists in the development of wireframes and supporting documentation, ensuring the scalability of design and navigational structures
  • works closely with content specialists to ensure site content is formatted to effectively fit within the site’s architecture
  • assists the Usability Specialist in establishing naming conventions and conducting card-sorting exercises, usability and paper prototype tests in a lab environment
  • contributes to the development of use cases and business process flows
  • participates in initial brainstorming and planning meetings
  • contributes to client and user research aiding in the development of web strategies and recommendations

Required Skills:

  • bachelor’s degree in a related field (psychology, human factors, library / information science, new media or information technology)
  • at least 3 years of professional experience in multimedia, interface design, usability or information technology
  • demonstrates a strong understanding of usability principles as they relate to interface design
  • comfortable using software such as Visio, Illustrator and/or InDesign for developing site maps
  • extremely detail-oriented with strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • able to effectively gather information and recommend strategies
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • must have a solid understanding of the web and web technologies
  • must be a self-starter with solid time management skills capable of working with a variety of different teams and clients
  • experience working on large, complex sites that integrate database components, e-commerce functionality or content management systems is an asset
  • experience with usability testing in a lab environment is a plus
