Are you looking for a chance to play a big role in a small team? Do you find yourself surfing the web and thinking, “I could have made that site better”? Are you the kind of person who wonders how something works — then actually goes and finds out? Then maybe you should be working with us.
Who We Are
Ping Interactive is a new startup company founded by veteran entrepreneurs Matt Harrop, Lorien Gabel (Interlog, BOAW Networks) and Stephan Paternot (TheGlobe.com). Ping is taking a fresh look at an old web application. We have a new take, a new business model, and intend to shake up and grow a market that desperately needs it. Our development office is located in Toronto where two of the founders have roots, and our head office is in New York City. The company is funded by the founders and a mix of professional investors and wealthy individuals.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for a web developer with creative energy, enthusiasm, a feel for user interface, strong coding skills, and a desire to learn by doing. We need someone to build a cutting edge Ajax interface, but also someone who understands that all that Ajaxy goodness is a means to an end, not the reason we’re here.
You will be part of a three-person core development team, two of whom are already coding. You will have a great deal of responsibility and will directly contribute to the success of the team and the company in a very visible way. You will work with the founders, graphic designers and the back-end development team. You will participate in product design decisions, with a particular focus on usability and interface. You will code everything our customers see.
If you like watching your best code go live and directly onto the screens of real customers, you’ll fit right in.
Work environment
You’ll be working in our casual, friendly office in downtown Toronto. We’re a small, dedicated team with no time for bureaucracy or irritating office politics. (It’s a startup, not a bank.) While based in New York, the founders frequently work in the Toronto office. You’ll work in Toronto and travel to New York on occasion, if you can live with having an excuse to spend some time down here. Be comfortable where you work, work on cool stuff, and be happy when you go home — you’ll live longer!
You will be working with:
- Javascript, xhtml, AJAX and css
- A UI toolkit that you’ll help chose
- Know a tool that will make the application better? You’ll be working with that too.
In this role you will need:
- Hands-on experience building websites with client-side scripting
- Ability to take charge of solving a problem, from beginning to end
- Ability to work closely with others in the company, and also independently when required
- Excellent programming skills (in any modern language)
- A solid understanding of website fundamentals: DOM, xhtml, Javascript, css
- Experience with Ruby on Rails and Prototype/Scriptaculous a plus
- Experience working with MySQL also a plus, but not quite as important
