What is the future of work?

by davidcrow

It starts with questions. With DHH asking about why you are not hiring more distributed workers, and Jevon asking about how new organizations work, I’m left wondering about the future of work. What role do companies, spaces, communities and people play? How do you define success? What role does technology, technocrats, entrepreneurs, location play in this new world? Is there a shift in power? Do we need new organizations? Individuals?

With a tractor an energetic farmer could plow six times as much land in a day as he could with a team of horses. But only if he mastered a new kind of farming.—Paul Graham

What are the next generation of tractors that are needed to improve productivity? Are they collaborative software? How about movies? Are they open source? Proprietary? Maybe they’re free?
