Hacking democracy

Wow! Hacking democracy is unbelievable. This documentary tells the story of Bev Harris and Black Box Voting investigation of electronic ballot counting. It is a compelling, frightening story that makes me want to investigate the vote counting process in Canada. I want to make sure that openness and transparency are part of the electoral process in Canada. What can we do to protect the freedoms guarranteed by our Constitution and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms?

The party used hundreds of barely noticeable tweaks distributed across precincts to throw hundreds of thousands of votes to Bush. I was a recount observer and witnessed these methods in action, the same systematic fraud that was noticed in one country and recently sent 2 election officials in Cleveland to jail. </p> <p>There’s a large but fairly disorganized voting activist community in the US, and Ohio, that Bev and many others have worked with since before the 2004 debacle. Most of us are promoting things like hand-counted paper ballots (like Canada still uses, right?) and statistically valid audits. But the problem is more the political situation, and not the processes themselves. With or without Diebold, national elections can be hacked by process only.</p> <p>By the way, what I witnessed was enough to send my wife and I to Toronto, a lot. The issues are very deep back in the US, and we like what we see in Canada. We now also live in Liberty Village – and hope to see more of you guys as we work and play in your neighborhood.</p>
